Bidfood supporting the care sector with e-learning platform 'Caterers Campus'
Published: 8th August 2023
At Bidfood we’re proud to support the care sector through our e-learning platform ‘Caterers Campus’, helping caterers to provide meals for those living with various medical conditions including diabetes.
More than 4.9 million people in the UK have diabetes, and the chronic disease is a common condition among elderly residents in care homes, in fact over half of people living with diabetes in the UK are 65 or older.
Effective diabetes care for older people requires nutritional support to help maintain healthy blood sugar level and reduce the risk of complications. However, our customer insight has revealed that catering for diabetes within the care sector is especially challenging, as care homes are operating under tight budgets and being impacted by rising food costs.
We understand that consistently creating nutritious and delicious meals tailored to residents’ individual requirements isn’t always easy, especially when you are juggling time, budgets, stock levels and the skill level of your staff. So to help navigate these challenges we present Caterers Campus, an online learning platform exclusive to Bidfood customers that takes the hard work out of supporting your team – so you have more time to focus on your residents.
Designed by our chefs, for your chefs, the specialist diabetes module includes understanding the causes and symptoms, how to cater for diabetes as well and menu planning, all in aid to equip care home staff with the right information and guidance they need. Made up of over a whopping 30 chapters, the unit also features a knowledge test at the end to really make sure everything has sunk in, and if it’s not a pass first time, no problem you can take the module again!
But that’s not all! To accompany Caterers Campus we’ve also devised a comprehensive guide to help carers navigate residents with diabetes. Packed full of advice, our guide will fill you with confidence when discussing diabetic care with your team members and residents.
In addition our Culinary Development Chef, Wayne Wright, has put together a full seven day meal plan to help inspire those in the care setting when catering for diabetes. Chef Wayne said: “I really enjoyed the challenge of creating the recipes, I wanted to create tasty, on-trend dishes that you wouldn’t normally associate with that of a diabetic offering whilst also making the lives of the chefs preparing them easier.”
